Nine ways to reduce cost per lead in Google Ads

Cost per lead rarely drops because of a bid change. On the accounts we've audited, it drops when the campaign stops paying for searches it was never meant to win.

Pull a search term report before you touch a single bid

Broad match under a Maximize Conversions strategy will find volume you never intended to buy. A weekly search term review, paired with a disciplined shared negative list, is usually the fastest cost reduction available — often 15-25% within the first month on an account that hasn't had one in a while.

  • Exclude DIY, 'jobs near me', 'free', 'cheap' and competitor-name searches explicitly
  • Split branded and non-branded into separate campaigns so blended CPL stops hiding a weak non-brand number
  • Check close-variant matches monthly in categories with overlapping vocabulary (e.g. 'repair' vs 'replace')

Decide what actually counts as a conversion

If a newsletter signup and a quote request are both flagged as primary conversions, Smart Bidding will chase whichever is cheaper to generate — almost never the one tied to revenue.

Set one primary conversion action tied to a real commercial outcome (booked call, submitted quote, completed purchase) and demote everything else to secondary so it stops influencing the bid.

Feed offline outcomes back into the account

Uploading closed-won and disqualified statuses from your CRM lets the algorithm bid toward opportunities that actually convert to revenue, not just form fills. On longer sales cycles (30+ days), this single change is often worth more than any bid adjustment you could make manually.

Fix the page the click lands on

A one-second improvement in mobile load time regularly moves conversion rate more than a month of bid tuning. Match the landing page headline word-for-word to the ad, cut the form to 4 fields or fewer, and put a tap-to-call number above the fold.
